glögg

DSC_0500[1]If you, like me, live in a Nordic country squeezed between Norway and the Baltic Sea, December is the time of year to indulge in this drink (while, for example, watching cross-country skiing and explaining to yourself that the reason the Norwegians always excel must be because Norway once belonged to Sweden…) Traditionally it is served hot with almonds (and raisins if you wish) but nothing besides tradition is stopping you from serving it chilled with ice cubes.

approx. 4-5 servings

3 dl freshly squeezed orange juice (about 4- oranges, depending on size and juiciness)

1 cinnamon rod

5 cloves

10 cardamom seeds

5 allspice seeds

1 tsp grated ginger

Add all ingredients to a saucepan, bring to a boil and let simmer for 10-15 min. Strain and serve hot or cold, with or without almonds. If you want more taste from the spices, you can let the juice rest without removing the spices over night in the refrigerator.
